They buy kits and parts, and replace things because they don't know how to troubleshoot and measure. People in this hobby love to spend time and money doing things that they believe will 'improve' their games. Just some trivially easy preventative maintenance.

It's a simple problem, with a simple solution that has a VERY wide and forgiving window to do. If I can run a game as close to its original configuration as possible, I'll choose that over any other option. However I'd have no problem doing the same if I were operating a game on location, as I'd rather not hack up my games and wiring if I can avoid it. Not to mention most of us here are talking about home use, which is a lot more forgiving. You have plenty of time to nip in the bud, even if you're lazy. It's a very slow, gradual process that takes a VERY long time to get to the point of causing damage. This issue happened because operators did NOTHING to these games, for years. But again, it's hacky, unnecessary, and overkill, if you just take the simple step of cleaning the game board fingers properly every couple of years, before it gets to the point of burning anything up (which again, takes YEARS of neglect, AND operating-level use). (And that's what a lot of operators did).
